Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a neurobiological disorder that persists throughout life is often referred as reading disability that affects ability to write, speak, read and spell, however language skills of children suffering from dyslexia can be improved. Most children with dyslexia have normal intelligence but difficulty in learning (decoding) words, letters and identifying speech sounds and need emotional support.

The threshold of self-esteem and frustration of children with dyslexia is generally low due to incompetence to perform well in life and in academia. Even when helping their families and schools to progress, it is important to note that their learning challenge is not due to lack of knowledge or willingness. Parents will discuss strategy regularly with teachers so they can lead a balanced life and engage in learning, social and other opportunities. Many successful dyslexic people agree with the fact that their parents' emotional support played a key role in improving their trust and learning skills.

Dyslexic children often find it difficult to express themselves, avoid doing homework, socializing is not because they are lazy but because of fear of failure. They should be allowed, in a risk-free environment, to practice reading and writing patently. And Teachers need to realize that lack of motivation is not the reason behind their failure to read and write, it's because of the difference in their brain output. For every little effort they make, they should be encouraged to allow them to gradually move towards the goal and build their self-esteem.

There should be appreciation of their talents, shortcomings and non-academic interests and they should be able to pursue their interests to make them feel good about themselves. Parents should seek professional assistance, and advocate for their needs appropriately.

When teachers and parents see an enthusiastic and bright child incapable of performing well over and over again, children feel frustrated by the inability to meet their expectation. Particularly those with perfectionist expectations may feel terrible and chronically inadequate to make stupid or careless mistakes that are actually out of their control. Compared to others, lack of social and physical immaturity can make them feel awkward in social situations, affect their relationship with others, and lead to lower peer expectations and poor self-image.

Condition often comes from the brain parts that allow effective language processing and it runs in families. Children have difficulty understanding simple sounds of speech, mixing sounds, and making associations between words that make it difficult to write, interpret, recall, memorize lists, interpret charts, or follow directions that hinder further development of their vocabulary, ability to learn, and context awareness despite having normal intelligence. Learning journey consists of partnership based on mutual understanding between parents and teachers for supporting kids.
